Introduction & What Is Conducted Emission
Every switching converter chops current at megahertz rates. Some of that switching energy always leaks onto the wires it's connected to — the AC mains cord, a DC input harness, or a signal cable. That leakage is a conducted emission, and it's measured directly on the cable, long before it ever has a chance to radiate through the air.
Conducted emissions are unwanted electrical noise generated by electronic equipment that propagates along conductive paths such as AC mains, DC input cables, and signal cables. Unlike radiated emissions, the energy stays confined to the conductor itself until it reaches measurement equipment or couples into another nearby system.
Almost every real CE failure starts with the same chain of events: a switching device inside the product creates a fast current or voltage transition, that transition couples onto a nearby cable, and the cable carries the noise straight out of the enclosure and into the AC mains — where a regulator is legally required to measure it.
