IEC 61000-4-4: Standard & Test Setup

IEC 61000-4-4 defines the generator characteristics, the waveform into 50 Ω/1000 Ω loads, the coupling methods, and the test procedure and durations. The product standard (e.g. CISPR/IEC family standards) then specifies the levels and the required performance criterion.

Learning objectives. Identify the generator, the coupling/decoupling network (CDN) for power ports, the capacitive coupling clamp for I/O, and the role of the ground reference plane.

Two coupling paths are used. For power ports, a coupling/decoupling network (CDN) injects the burst onto the supply lines while decoupling the burst from the mains supply. For signal/control ports, a capacitive coupling clamp drapes over the cable and couples the burst capacitively without any galvanic connection — realistic, since field coupling is capacitive too.

The ground reference plane and the fixed cable geometry make results repeatable: the EUT sits a defined height above the plane, cables are a set length, and the clamp position is standardized. Small setup changes (cable dress, bonding) move results by several kV-equivalent, so document and lock the arrangement.

Decoupling matters. The CDN's decoupling side keeps the burst from flowing back into the lab mains and other equipment — and keeps the test repeatable.
Safety. The generator produces kV transients. Follow interlocks, bonding and PPE; treat the setup as hazardous, per the Surge setup guidance.
