IEC 61000-4-3: Standard & Chamber Setup

IEC 61000-4-3 defines the test field, the frequency ranges and dwell, the modulation, and the uniform-field-area concept. The product standard sets the level and the required performance criterion. The test is performed in a chamber lined with RF absorber to prevent reflections that would make the field non-uniform.

Learning objectives. Identify the anechoic chamber, uniform-field area, field probe, transmit antennas, and how the EUT is arranged and monitored.

A field probe calibrates and monitors the field; broadband antennas (log-periodic, horn) generate it across the sweep; and a power amplifier drives them. Field uniformity is established over a defined area before the EUT is introduced, so the EUT genuinely sees the rated V/m.

The EUT is exercised in a representative mode and monitored for malfunction — often via fibre-optic links or shielded monitoring so the monitoring gear itself doesn't perturb the field. The EUT is tested on multiple faces and both antenna polarizations, because susceptibility is orientation-dependent.

Common mistake: monitoring the EUT with unshielded cabling that couples the field into the monitor, producing false failures. Use optical/shielded monitoring.
